To setup shares you already own, copied from: http://moneydance.com/forum/YaBB.pl?action=print;num=1204483105

I'm a new user too, and also frustrated by the lack of activity on this forum, and the lack of documentation. But, maybe I can help:

I don't do individual stocks, but it should be the same as for the mutual funds that I track:

1) create account of type 'investment'

2) go to the 'securities detail' view and 'add security' to add the fund names that you are going to be tracking

3) you need some money in the account, so either set an initial balance via 'edit account', or create a transaction, type Xfr, probably transferring some $$ from a bank account.

4) buy shares by creating a 'Buy' transaction, 'Security Category' is the fund you are buying. Under the 'Shares Price' column you enter 2 things: the top half is the number of shares, the bottom half is the price.

You can also combine the last 2 steps in 1 transaction of type 'BuyXfr?'.

Hope that helps.
