Description

I'd really like to see an Edit Menu in the Menu Bar with all the regular editing commands (e.g. Cut, Copy, Paste, etc.)

I would like to add to this. Once in a while, I put a transaction in the wrong account. It would certainly be handy to be able to cut and paste individual or groups of transactions from one account to another, especially if there are a lot of splits involved. Quicken can do this, at least circa 2000.

I don't know what the plans are for 2006, but it would be great if this could be incorporated.

I'd like to add my support for this feature for 2006. The ability to cut/copy/paste transaction fields and particularly complete transactions would be a big added feature for me. There are transactions that are irregular in occurrance and so cannot be scheduled, but you want to be able to copy and paste. Also a similar action to MOVE a transaction entered into a wrong account by mistake, via a menu instruction. The most elegant approach seems to me to add the full standard Apple Edit menu drop-down choices: Undo, Rewdo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, etc. And also add these via the mouse right-click function.

Having converted from Quicken I would also like to see an Edit menu with copy/cut/paste plus possibly search/replace functionality (great for changing accounts). Moneydance appears odd in OSX (and Windows too I believe) by not having an Edit menu and associated functionality.

I'm actually against the Edit Menu request. I think it isn't a needed interface and it would be another thing for Sean to support. For instance, .. are you asking to edit /copy/paste/delete ... accounts, multiple transactions, single transactions, part of transactions, reports, memorized reports, etc ... or like I think will be answered by the rest of the users... all of the above.

It will cause more interface questions than it would improve. I think inline needed commands as you are editing (as Sean is moving to) is the correct way to go for the future in software gui design.

I don't have a strong opinion either way about the copy/paste stuff, but some kind of mechanism to undo an unintended transaction deletion would be a welcome addition...

I'm happy with or without the edit menu, but copy/paste a whole transaction would save me a huge amount of fiddle just about every time I use MD. I used it very frequently in Quicken. It should be very compatible with the existing right-click/ctrl-click contextual menu.

Replying to sreilly:

Any update to when cut/copy/paste of entire transactions will be implemented ?

Please include a cloning functionality for transactions. It's a feature I used a lot in Money, and it's about the only thing I miss.

Transactions can be moved to other accounts using the batch-change->Account function in the register's popup menu. I don't currently have plans to support full cut/copy/paste of entire transactions because it adds a level of complexity. I think cut/copy/paste should be limited to text.

Cloning is another issue, but can currently be accomplished by creating a new transaction and using auto-completion.

Sean - I'd really really like to ask you respectfully to reconsider cut/copy/paste. I hadn't noticed that you can now move one or more transactions to another account through "batch change" (brilliant! - when did that get added ? ... ). So that provides an excellent alternative to cut-paste transaction. But IMHO the lack of copy-paste functionality (in whatever form) is a major defect. Memorised transactions/ auto-completion really doesn't serve this purpose in any efficient way - a. because transactions are only accessible within the same account register; and b. because the memorised transaction popup doesn't display enough content to identify which transaction you want. (See #452)

So please reconsider ...
