Description

There's been much discussion on the mailing list and forum about ways to implement Envelope Budgeting in Moneydance. This Wiki article mentions one way it can be achieved, but it could be improved with a little bit of extra help from Moneydance.

http://moneydance.com/trac/wiki/Envelope_Budgeting

The main improvement required is a new account type for Envelopes. Envelope accounts would behave as follows:

  • can be listed on the home page, alongside bank accounts, assets, etc, so we can see balances at a glance
  • operate like existing Income accounts, so that they have a positive balance when you make them the receiving category for a Deposit into a bank account, and the balance reduces when you make them the category for a purchase (payment) from a bank account
  • payments (reducing balances) are counted as Expenses so that Income/Expense reports and graphs continue to make sense

This sounds like it could be done without having any adverse side-effects. Could it please be considered? Users are crying out for a supported method of Envelope budgeting.
