Budget report investment account line items seem to include change in market value

Reported by: msumick Assigned to: sreilly

Component: graphing/reporting Version: 2008.beta
Keywords: Budget Report Cc:

Description

In Md 2008 Beta, the Budget report is returning invalid results for investment accounts. For example, in one account I paid in 1200 for the month, but in the budget report it says that I paid in 2381.92. This amount might make sense if the report is adding in the change in market value of the account during the month. However, adding in the change in market value makes the report incorrect.

MD 2007 did not exhibit this type of behavior.

  • status changed from new to closed.
  • resolution set to fixed.

This is because it was including transfers to/from the sub-accounts of the investment account (the securities themselves). This has been fixed for build 601. Thanks for the report!

  • status changed from closed to reopened.
  • resolution deleted.

Using Build 602, I am still seeing the same behavior. The totals do seem roughly doubled, so you comment appears to be correct in picking up the transfers.

In build 602 budget items for investment accounts will record the following:

  • any funds transferred into or out of the account
  • the proceeds or costs of any buy/sell/short/cover transactions that is not also a transfer (ie BuyXfr/SellXfr?/etc).

Could this be what you are seeing?

The only transactions I have in the register are transfers of cash in and then the purchase of the securities. the budget report should only track the transfers into the account. I have not sold and securities, so this is not a cause of the approximate doubling. I do have some minor dividend reinvestment transactions as well, but not nearly enough to cause the doubling in the budget report.

Example from one of the investment accounts that is showing up incorrect in the budget report:

Expense Budget Actual Difference Roth IRA $800.00 $1,607.89 $807.89

My transactions for the month are as follows: 1 xfr to the account from checking account for the amount of $800.00 4 transactions purchasing securities equaling $800.00

I can see where the report is doubling the amount to $1,600.00 (even though this behavior would be incorrect), but I have no idea where the additional $7.89 is coming from.

This type of behavior is displayed in all investment accounts in the budget report.

FYI, same behavior in 603.
