[moneydance] printing

Big fan of Moneydance and have been using it for years.  Looking for some help (again) with printing.  I have Moneydance running, an older release, as I do not require allot of bells and whistles but do need to be able to print checks.  I tried a new release last year and since printing didn't work just stayed with old version.  I had this problem before with the release I am using and understand that it has to do with cups and java mainly - I am on Linux.  Well I have just started looking at upgrading to Mepis 8.0 which seems good and am now checking apps that must work.  I downloaded the current release of Moneydance with java and installed.  Tried to print checks, actually test print from properties part where you configure the checks.  Seems to go through, no error msg etc. but nothing prints out.  
  HELP or suggestions.  I will try and dig out the list of gyrations I went through to get the printing to work with version I am using now but as I remember it was hours and hours of this and that and in the end not exactly sure what got it working.
