In the past I tried to keep an 'envelope system' within MD and it worked but was somewhat complicated.
Later I found the Envelope Budget Spreadsheet[1] from It's Your Money. This is a great simple product to keep track of my envelope spending when going straight from the checking account via debit card or check. So there is double work to do when spending money due to an entry in MD and an entry in the spreadsheet, but for the benefits of keeping track of my spending this way its worth the time (which works out to a few minutes) and effort (to learn and set it up).
So until Sean and company integrate an envelope system into MDI'll keep doing things this way.
