[moneydance] moneydance.md file corrupt or missing. error

When I try to open Moneydance 640 I get a message saying
"The file 'moneydance.md' is corrupt or missing. It can be restored
from backup(s). Please select one from the following."

I then get a list of 3 actions to Create New, Open Existing or Import
File. When I exit out of this I get the message
"ignoring invalid argument: -Xmx512m".

I backed up all files on my main computer to another computer just a few
days ago. There is a moneydance.md file on the backup computer with the
same date and time as the moneydance.md file on my main computer. That
file also gives me the same error result if I open it from the command
line with "Moneydance moneydance.md" (a method I sometimes use to run MD
when I am in the MD data directory).

I have also tried to open older moneydance.md-2009-07-day but all files
are giving me an error.

Are my files screwed up or is something wrong with Moneydance itself?
How to I open files like "moneydance.md-2009-07-day"?
