I use VueScan - could never get xsane to work properly with my scanner.
VueScan is very user friendly and makes good scans. However, while it
has an OCR function, I was never able to get it to work well (and I
purchased the professional version). I may have missed something in the
process. I used to do a lot of OCR work in Windows, and the program that
came with my Epson scanner did a good job.
