I would disagree that there needs to be a way that is always in front
of the user, but there should be a way for the less sophisticated or
mouse-centric user to access functions by mouse, just as there should
be a way for the power or keyboard-centric user to access those
functions via the keyboard. I think that a context menu, accessed by
right-click or modifier-click would be the answer. It would free up
the screen real estate that the buttons used and should be
discoverable for all users, as context menus have become a standard
feature of the modern GUI.
