Just realized that my reply only went to Ric - sorry.

Actually, I do include my OS in that statement. I am one of those
terribly old fashioned people who restarts their computer daily.
Everything works better, program memory leaks are closed, and I am a
happier person :-) My position is that anything that is intended for
direct use by the unwashed masses should not be treated like an Apache
server and left running indefinitely.

I am coming from the other end of the spectrum - my real job is
supporting end users on database accounting software. I have seen almost
unbelievable horror stories over the years regarding database corruption
and no viable backups. It has given me a very healthy respect for the
care and feeding of any program that has all of my financial information
- or maybe paranoia is a better term. But I have not lost any data for
~10 years or so.

Also, within the last year we have had reports on this mailing list
regarding database and backup corruption - there was a specific cause
found, IIRC, but it still happened. And that is my point.

Yep. Best practices will keep you from serious regrets. And from my
point of view, not leaving an end user program running for days on end
should be considered a best practice. But that is strictly my opinion.
