[moneydance] Initial Balance not matching

I am having a terrible time with reconciling an initial month in  
MoneyDance.  I imported my QIF file which was partially wrecked -  
tons of accounts created for apparent transactions, etc.  It is  
extremely difficult to determine what even happened.  All of that  
aside, I can work on fixing those things if I can get reconciliation  
of the account going.

My problem is when the reconciliation dialog comes up, the initial  
balance does not reflect my initial balance in the account, and I  
cannot change it in the dialog.  I have manually cleared the flags  
for download/reconciliation on all of my transactions, yet it still  
has a different balance.  I am at a loss.  I would greatly appreciate  
any help you can provide.
