Something like this would be useful for me as well; I have some
expense categories that are no longer used but have historical
importance. I'm not ready to archive them for another year or so but
am not updating them either. At least one of them brings up bad
memories, and it would be nice not to see it casually go by while I'm
updating my accounts. It could be argued that I should set up my
accounts differently to avoid that, but I dunno -- someone, say, whose
beloved dog died will probably not want be using the "Pet Expenses"
category for a while and might well prefer to have it not show up.
A broader feature that would be useful for me would be different views
that were easy to switch between. In my case, it would be useful to
have a UK and a US view, since I have investments in both countries,
have income and expenses in both countries, have to file tax returns
in both countries, and spend some time in both countries every year.
When I'm in the UK, it would be much cleaner for everyday updates to
just see the UK view, and vice versa. Being able to step back and see
the overall picture is essential, of course.
