[moneydance] Crash and Burn

I have just begun using MD in earnest, and becoming quite upset. My
first attempt to bring in my data resulted in a complete mess. After
spending a month or so on and off I decided I had learned enough of
some of the limitations to start over and hopefully get better results.
I began a new file with minimal category setup. Changed main checking
to my Checking account and imported all of my data from my bank site
in QIF. After spending about 12 hours categorizing and recording
transactions (with a couple of saves along the way) MD hung and after
a couple of hours had to be forced quit.
Now it claims none of the file is readable, as well as the backup
file, and goes back and starts up with the original attempt file.
I am very frustrated and at a loss as how to continue, or if for all
of it's promise if MD is worth spending all of the hours to convert
to. With minimal documentation and numerous bugs I can see in the
overall display and operation, I think I am on the verge of being
forced back to Quicken for the Mac (not great at doing all of what I
want, but it has never crashed and lost ALL of my data).
Does anyone know a way to recover the data file.
Thanks.
