[moneydance] balancing an account - the basics

Hello, I'm just getting started with MD in many ways.  I've
yet to balance my accounts after finally getting them all
set up after imports, etc.

I recently started a balance session and noticed that I
couldn't change the beginning balance.  Questions:

1) Does this mean I must always balance sequentially, i.e.,
can't do any balancing out of order?
2) Where does the very first opening balance come from?
