That's how you need to do it. An 'Interest income' transaction type
would be a natural for an 'investment' account, but MD doesn't seem to
offer it. Unfortunate. You could put in a request for one in the MD
Trac system, on the MD support page.

Actually, you might as well use the Xfr transaction. Even though MD
has a DIV transaction, it doesn't ensure that an actual 'Dividend
Income' category will be used, it just uses the default category (I
have recorded many DIV transactions with the 'Commissions' category
because of this). So, an INT transaction with the same shortcoming
would offer no greater convenience than Xfr anyway.
