Sorry I missed the point earlier. Have you tried setting it up as a loan 
with a negative principal? It *almost* works and I think it could probably 
be rigged to work. (Which would also prove the point that all that's needed 
is an adjustment to the UI.) When I tried it, the main problem I ran into 
is that the popup menu for the interest account only showed expense 
categories, when of course you need an income category in this case -- 
something I think could be rigged by editing the XML file.

The caveat is that I've only tried to set it up, haven't actually used the 
technique.
