It takes two changes to the security history/definition to get rid of
the $10,000 price: remove the bogus entry from the history, and edit
the security--the edit window contains a price field that will stay
10,000 until the next price update. Change that field to the correct
value (which you just saw when editing the history) and the 10,000
should go away.
This looks like an example of software outsmarting itself. MD was
changed recently to record a price history entry whenever it thinks it
might have one: apparently it does so on downloaded Dividend
transactions. We now know that one should not count on a Dividend
transaction to have a sensible/appropriate Price field in it.
The funniest part is, Quicken has recorded price entries on dividend
transaction downloads for some time, but they always record ZERO,
making people 'poorer' instead of 'richer'. This was true in Q2005
(Mac) anyway, but I wouldn't rely on Intuit to fix bugs like this, so
it may well still be the case.
I have begged to have price updates only performed when the price is
specifically being addressed: buys/sells and price downloads (NOT
dividend downloads, etc. etc.). I think that would offer a much better
chance of avoiding bogus price entries. Dumber/simpler software can
sometimes be more reliable software, and that's what we want for
financial tracking software.
