Because MD uses a document model rather than a database model, there's no
question that a crash (application, system, disk) in the middle of writing
the file will result in an unusable file. This is why MD needs a stronger
backup scheme than a database-based program. It's a standard trade-off, and
both methods work when properly implemented.
Based on Quicken's behavior, I gather that it's based on database
technology, although it's internal.
MD *could* be redesigned to use, say, MySQL. I don't know how much that
would cost. But as much as I prefer database technology in theory, it seems
to me that MD's current method works. You will occasionally see a need to
go to a backup, but that seems to be the only real downside.
