I have to recommend that you think hard as to whether there's really a
reason to merge the account *history* as opposed to simply transferring the
*balance* from one account into the other (or both into a third account).
Merging the histories would create a fictional past, and I don't see any
benefit from that fiction.
Remember that you can leave the closed account in MD forever, with a zero
balance. You can still report on it, search for transactions in it, etc.
The only sense in which it's "closed" in MD is the zero balance and the
lack of transactions after a certain date. And it represents your true
financial history. I have numerous accounts still in MD (converted from
Quicken) which have been dead for years in Real Life.
