I have just entered ticket #616, 
http://trac.moneydance.com/trac/ticket/616, on this problem. I called it 
"major", though I'd say it's pretty close to "critical".

One possibility would be

1) export as XML
2) save all the descriptive XML for the loan account
3) change the account type to liability (Y)
4) open the XML file
5) make changes
6) export as XML
7) replace the description with the saved description

I haven't tried this, don't know if it would work or how hard it would be. 
Don't know in particular whether all the loan description is in one place.
