To my knowledge the only existing java printing bug has to do with gs 
version 8.50, yet both the recent problems were reported against gs 8.15 
so I'm in the dark.  Saying it works for me with java version "1.5.0_06" 
and  gs --version 8.15.2 with slackware current and CUPS doesn't solve 
anyone's problems - but...
