Ah-ha. For some reason I had tried microseconds but not milliseconds. The
Java docs at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/sql/Date.html say
>public class Date [...] A milliseconds value represents the number of
>milliseconds that have passed since January 1, 1970 00:00:00.000 GMT.
So the number represents a time sometime on September 24, 2006. Whether a
date in the future is reasonable depends on what the item is.
