I simply went to (in my case) "Checking", and then re-ran the "Set up
for online banking" (or whatever it's called -- I don't have MD
running right now to check). The next time I tried to download, the
pop-up panel for my password still had my old ID, but I changed that
to the new one and then entered my password, and it remembered that
for the next time. Though I did have to repeat the whole process for
my other account with BoA (Savings).

Yeah, it's quite frustrating. You really get the feeling that there
are lots of different divisions of technical support, and nobody
speaks to anyone else (or reads their bulletins). This should have
been a no-brainer from my first email....

Actually, it makes very little technical sense -- though at an
operational security level, it makes sense from the standpoint that
it makes it harder to use, say, one's telephone number or SSN or
anything as an ID. Though really, it doesn't matter what my ID is,
it's my password that needs to be kept private. (and I've got a
running beef with a lot of sites, including BoA, over stupid password
requirements. I generate very secure passwords, and lots of sites
won't even accept them because of the characters I use. Hell, BoA
won't even let me use a "!" (!!).)
