Right, that was my thought. You couldn't read my mind? Oh well.
It would be a bit like the cash balance in an investment, or a lot like a
PayPal account. (Which is, yes, a pain. I didn't track my PayPal as an
account until I got a return and left money there for a while.) You could
treat the loans as sub-accounts so you could see the overall balance. Or
even have a "loans" sub-account with individual loans within that.
As pointed out, yes the pain is out of proportion for the amount you're
talking about. Should it work out and you start making mortgage loans via
prosper.com, there's time enough to adjust your methods. The simpler
version is probably fine for now.
Eventually in my Copious Spare Time (tm), I will look into the MD plug-in
interface. I suspect that it's flexible enough to implement several
extensions to the way accounts work, such as
-- mini-loans from a central account (prosper.com)
-- mostly pass-through but occasional holding (PayPal)
-- small-scale receivables
