The backup files intentionally have the date appended AFTER the extension, 
making them not associated with MD. Make a fresh copy of the backup file 
you want to use, and rename it so the extension is .md. Then MD should open it.

But as others have pointed out, your old MD file should be intact unless 
you explicitly saved over it. If it's not in the folder with the dated 
backup files, then you've probably enabled the "separate backup folder" 
option. If you know where the backup files are but don't remember where the 
primary file is, search your entire disk for .md files.
