Overview of Basic Features of Moneydance 3

Home Page - A Detailed Look

The information shown on the home page includes account balances, upcoming and overdue transactions and reminders, and if you scroll down to the bottom of the home page screen you'll see a list of exchange rates. If you move your mouse to the title bar were it reads current balance and click on it, you will notice that it gives you different balances of your accounts. It will provide the account balance, its current balance, and cleared balance for the account, which is useful for reconciliations. Clicking on an account or choosing an account from the drop-down account list will take you to the account register of a specific account. The register is where you enter transactions or reconcile the accounts against the statements. Clicking on the transaction reminder will display a window where you can automatically record the transactions.

Account Register:

From the Home Page we can move into the account register by clicking on an account or selecting an account from the drop-down account list at the top of the window. This screen allows you to enter, edit, and delete transactions within an account. It is very similar in layout to your checkbook register but the nice thing about this register is that calculation of balances and the sorting of transactions is all done automatically. Another feature this screen offers is an auto complete feature; this reduces the number of keystrokes you need to make when entering similar or repetitive transactions.

Reconciliation Tool:

One task that is always a real chore is reconciling your checkbook with your bank statement or your credit purchases with your credit card statement. With Moneydance this process has been automated. Your account is balanced here, against a Bank Statement or Credit Card Statement. Enter the ending balance of your statement, then click on those transactions that occur on the statement. This tool maintains your current cleared balance, target balance, and the difference between the two.

Check Printing:

Checks can be printed directly from Moneydance transactions. Printing checks is as easy as marking transactions to be printed, then clicking on the Print Checks button in the account register. Marking transactions to be printed is a simple matter of setting the Check# field for the transaction to "{Print}". Checks can be printed in batches or individually. Moneydance currently prints checks three to a Page, on standard check paper, but the type and positioning of checks can be arranged in many different configurations using the "Calibrate Printer" function.

Account Graphing Tool:

You can use the graphing tool capabilities of this software to generate virtual reports of your financial situation. Simply set the date range, the account to graph, the type of graph you desire, and the grouping of data to display i.e. daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, or none. Then click on Generate Graph and your results will be printed to the screen for your reviewing. Another feature of the graphing tool is that as you move the mouse over different regions of the graph, the screen displays additional information about data from your report. These reports can be printed or saved to an image (GIF.) file.

Account Graphing Tool/Pie Graph:

The reporting features of this tool kit also generate bar graphs as well as line graphs.

Report Tools:

Use the report tools to generate custom reports that can be printed or saved as HTML. Just set the report type, date range, the grouping, and rearrange the columns to customize the output to suit your specific needs.

Currencies and Exchange Rates:

This software also has multi-currencies support to track your foreign and domestic accounts. All the exchange rates are maintained in a central table, and these are used as defaults for transfer between accounts with different currencies. Additional currency types (such as stocks and mutual funds) can be easily defined.
