After a long wait, Moneydance 2010 is now within reach! Here are some of the improvements and new features you can look forward to with the new version.
The new sidebar allows single-click access to all account registers, graphs, reports and budgets.

Moneydance can optionally download all connected online accounts in the background. All downloaded or imported OFX/QFX/OFC transactions will go directly into the register and use a simpler new method of “cleaning up” downloaded transactions. If you trust the transactions that download from your bank then you don’t need to do anything.

The new version has improvements in many other areas including budget status reporting, capital gains reports as well as editing and reporting on tags.
Users who purchased Moneydance on or after March 28, 2008 will receive a free upgrade to MD 2010. Purchases prior to then entitle you to a half price upgrade. Moneydance 2010 does not yet have a final release date or price, but we will let you know when these decisions have been made.
Moneydance 2010 is now available for beta testing! (http://moneydance.com/trac/wiki/Moneydance2010Beta).
We invite you to download this beta release if you are willing to report bugs and help us track down issues that may have arisen in this new version. Please do not use this version for your primary use yet, there are still a few bugs and kinks that need to be worked out. We would like you to know that this is not a final beta version, as additional features are still being added to Moneydance 2010.

This is FANTASTIC news. Better late than never!
Can’t wait to try it…

Oh, a quick thought– it would be great to have MD5 checksums or some other form of validation to ensure (as much as possible) that the file downloads are untainted. It would also be cool to have these come from SSL-secured sources validated via a certificate, for obvious reasons…
Thanks again,

I tried Quicken and I hated it. Moneydance does everything I need to do – exactly the way I want to do it. Plus I use a Mac, Windows and Linux – with Moneydance on all three platforms. Quicken can’t touch that.

Great news. Thank you for the updates. I am looking forward to this next release.

Im looking forward to the next version — I like the sidebar already. Are there any screenshots of the iPhone version available to see?

Thanks for the update.
My initial comments after installing and playing with MD2010 for about 10 minutes are:
1. The sidebar is Great! Makes navigation much easier
2. When I click the “Home Page” icon on the sidebar it opens a new window where I would expect to remain in the same window and be taken to the “My Finances” screen.
3. I really hope you add a feature to change the date span for the performance graph under security details.
Regards,
Terry

I’m using Snow Leopard. When I open the beta, all I get is the first dropdown menu with About Moneydance, Preferences and the options to hide, show or close the program. Nothing else. So I can’t try the program as is…

Hi Jeff, I’m the main developer of Moneydance and use snow leopard so it does work in at least one case. The first build (build 700 in the “about” window) had issues when opening a data file that was different than the last one opened or if your data file had a password. That has been fixed in build 701 which is out now, and many further bugs regarding the main window have been fixed for build 702 which is not yet available. If I were you, I’d wait for 702 :)
Thanks,
Sean

Looks great. I’m using iBank right now and considering doing a switch when the 2010 version is released. Perhaps I’m just dreaming, but a ‘killer’ feature for me would be a budgeting system that actually is helpful and usable — moneydance, quicken and ibank all get ‘Fs’ in this regard. Envelope budgeting works really well, so I’m wondering if there is any desire to perhaps look into implementing this into Moneydance 2010. I’d sign up right away.

Second request. Keep the blog going and communication very open and frequent. The only real hesitation I have with switching to Moneydance is that you guys act like you’re out of business or soon to go out of business. Communication with the end-user is pretty bad (I’ve been following Moneydance for a year now.) No one worries about the big cheeses like Intuit going out of business, so their communication can really suck. You guys have to stand out otherwise fewer people will want to buy your product (ie. why should I invest all my time in entering data into your software if it might stop being published at any moment?)
Thanks, and continue the great developing.

Hey Shawn, I’m right there with you on the envelope budgeting feature. This is becoming more popular and IMO the best way to budget. Would use MD if this were implemented or if it was added on as a second way to budget.
November 11th, 2009 at 7:46 am
I whole heartedly agree to Envelope Budgeting. If this is what I believe it is, we’re using the envelope system in our home and I use MD2008 also. Currently I can not use MD to its full potential b/c of the budgeting feature. Also, I posted a topic in problems and I have not seen any activity. Is this normal? It’s been quite a while and others posted after mine have been closed??

MoneyDance can be made to do Envelope budgeting, but it’s a bit fiddly. Here are some notes on how to do it:
http://moneydance.com/trac/wiki/Envelope_Budgeting
Once MD2010 is released, I’ll give that article an overhaul. I haven’t yet seen anything in the MD2010 beta which makes Envelope budgeting easier, but let’s wait and see.

Does 2010 fix the problem with downloaded Discovercard transactions? (cf Trac ticket: http://moneydance.com/trac/ticket/1193)
November 11th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
We’re working on the Discover card transactions however the error is clearly on the Discover side of the connection. We are however trying to implement a workaround.
As for envelope budgeting, that is definitely a feature we’d love to officially support and someday will. MD2010 has improvements in budgeting, but mostly with showing the status of your budgets. You can setup something very similar to envelope budgeting by creating a regular budget and then setting the intervals to “non-prorated”. That will establish a set amount per month/week/quarter/etc that you can spend rather than doing the pro-rated calculation for any given time period that Moneydance would otherwise perform.

I have a request for a simple feature that I would find useful for MD2010.
In an account when I select a number of transactions it would be nice if the total could be displayed somewhere – such as the info bar at the bottom. Would save a lot of time with the calculator.

Just discovered moneydance; have downloaded the trial and can’t wait to give it a go. The2010 version looks even better. One question – can I export account balances to MS Excel?

Great news for Brazilian users! I’m from Brazil and I’m using Moneydance since July/2008, and I would like to say that Moneydance is THE BEST PERSONAL FINANCE SOFTWARE that I know. Moneydance is better than the majority of brazilian softwares for personal finance, and much simplier to use when compared to Quicken or other alternatives, like GnuCash (my second choice personal finance software!). Please, continue the god work!

The MD 2010 beta (build 701) looks very promising! :-)
A couple of comments:
- The new sidebar doesn’t preserve the hierarchy of accounts; for instance, I have this credit card hierarchy: “Credit cards: Personal Credit cards: Bank X”; this hierarchy gets flattened in the side bar.
- Same story for loans: I have “All loans: Edication loans: Bank y”; this hierarchy gets flattened.
- Will we see the ability to group investment accounts which has been requested several times?
- The new sidebar IS very nice! :-) But the account selector right above looks a little out of place, now. If the account selector is planned to remain in MD, I would suggest to think about moving it further to the right, so it appears left aligned with the register/account display, as it does at present.
Keep it up – this build looks VERY PROMISING! MANY THANKS :-)
November 13th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
argh..I was hoping for some better graphs in Investment Accounts. (sigh) I guess we have to wait longer. It looks fairly similar to the existing version.
I’m sure the rest of the tweaks and improvements will be great. Here’s hoping,,

Just curious how the download matching and acceptance process is supposed to work on MD 2010.
The downloaded transactions appear to be marked with a small blue icon and when clicked the acceptance button shows up at the bottom. But clicking the accept button does not appear to do anything. The blue icon never goes away. Is there a description anywhere? The help files don’t appear to be updated yet.
November 18th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
Nor does the “online status info” do anything.
November 18th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
As Mike says on 11/15 – the Accept button in downloaded transactions doesn’t do anything. I hope this gets fixed soon as I am scared my register will get all screwy very fast – I can’t the balances in the register already!! Please fix this ASAP!!

It doesn’t appear that the Networth number on the homepage can be configured. Will this ever be a feature?
I’ve been waiting for this feature for a long time. It’s in just about every personal finance app except MD. I like MD but this one of those things that just drives me nuts.
Another note, the standard keyboard shortcut for closing windows on Mac (command + w) doesn’t work in MD 2010.
November 20th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
On my computer, I noticed that the new sidebar on the MD2010 beta encroaches on the home page spacing. In other words, what’s viewable in MD2008 now requires scrolling right or left. Hopefully, MD2010 will re-size the home page to eliminate the need to scroll right or left to view data.
IMHO, the new sidebar is useful on the individual account pages, but is somewhat redundant on the home page. Perhaps you will implement an option to “dock” the sidebar.
Thanks,
Jeff

I also get the Snow Leopard error when launching MD 2010 Beta. When I open the program, I get a grey screen, with nothing else. I can launch preferences, etc, but nothing else happens.
I also haven’t heard about the reporting when it comes to multiple accounts. Can we finally separate those in this edition? Thanks!
November 23rd, 2009 at 12:01 am
I just installed MD 2010 beta in Windows and I don’t understand why still we cannot separate between accounts in Detailed Income & Expenses charts? Shouldn’t be such a hard feature to add, especially since other reporting that is much less useful, like charts, have it. Now, when it comes to doing my taxes, I have to delete and re add accounts, while making sure I don’t make a mistake. It’s very important to have two separate ways of reporting when you have two corps to file for. PLEASE add this feature to the final release. Many people have asked for this feature. Thanks.

On a MBP OSX10.58 MD appears to load but only the ‘Moneydance’ menu item shows (it more or less works) but thats it!

Does MD 2010 support changing tags for multiple transactions at once?
This would be a very important feature for me.
Thanks,
Patrick

Patrick,
I’m a newbie to MD2008, but I downloaded the “find and replace” extension which appears to be able to do precisely what you are asking. Specifically, with this extension you have the option to “replace all” transactions in a search field. I’d assume MD2010 will still have the capability of running this extension.

MoneyDance 2010 comments.
The left tool bar is a useful feature, but there should be an option to hide the tool bar when not needed. The reduced space for the main menu causes many of the right column titles to be hidden where the horizontal slider must be used to see.
Also on another note concerning the registers. The small blue indicator that is shown on downloaded transactions should be right clickable to allow acceptance instead of having to drop to the bottom of the screen to accept.

Hi,
I like all of the new features I have tried with the exception of downloading transactions.
The new method is not as easy and takes more mouse clicks to accomplish the same thing. I like to enter information in the memo field of each transaction. To do this I must double click the transaction, enter the information, hit return and then go to the bottom and click accept to clear the little blue dot from the transaction. The old method was much simpler for me. I could just enter the information and click record. Would it be possible to have the option to use the old system as in 2008? I did not put this in the Trac as this is not really a bug, just a feature I do not care for.
Thanks for some great software,
Frank

I tried to enter a ticket logged in but got an error message that I didn’t have the privileges. Under Snow Leopard, when the side bar is hidden and the window resized, it reappears. In order to “fix it”, I have to select “Show Side Bar” and then “Hide Side Bar”.

Fidèle à Moneydance depuis le début.
Excellent !

When I try to delete an active account Moneydance shuts down. On re-opening Moneydance no changes have been made to the account.

MoneyDance looks great but I think it can be greater, at least in my prospective. It needs more banks for online banking. Add Navy Federal Credit Union, USAA, AAFES and Sharebuilder to your list online banking you will put rhythm in our money.

Byron– USAA is on there.

In the past Moneydance would not work with PNC Bank. I was told that this was being fixed. Will Moneydance now work with PNC Bank?
April 6th, 2010 at 10:31 am
Hi Bob, Moneydance does now do direct connections with PNC Bank. You may have to ask them to set up your account for “direct connections from Quicken for Windows” (since QWin and Moneydance use the exact same connection method). You will then be given a username/password that is different than the one you use to connect through their web site.
