It’s been over a year since the first release of Moneydance 2007, and we’re happy to present the final release of Moneydance 2008. Final, that is, until 2008r2 is ready.
The high-level list of changes over Moneydance 2007 are:
- Improved matching for downloaded transactions
- Zoom-able home page graph for quickly exploring your income and expenses
- Undo/Redo support when modifying transactions
- Over/under budget highlighting in toolbar graph
- Popup calendar for choosing dates
- New Capital Gains report
…among many other bug fixes and interface improvements. For the download, just hit the usual place: moneydance.com.
Of course we’d like to take a break after this release but there are just too many things on which we’re working. Stay tuned for more impressive features in 2008r2 as well as another unrelated application on which we’ve been working secretly for a while. Can you stand the suspense?!
Cheers,
Sean

Um, I’d like to know what your unrelated application is? Is it something that applies to worldwide users, or something specific? Greg

The unrelated application will be available to worldwide users. It is not related to finances in any way, other than that we hope it will earn some. Unfortunately it is still in a pretty rough condition so I don’t want to give away what it is until it is stable and usable enough to show.

When I click “check for updates”, Moneydance b604 tells me I am using the most recent version.
Is this correct?

The new zooming is very cool. Nice touch.

I would be very interested in what the future holds for Moneydance. Not to hold you down to specifics, but, for example……do you one day hope for it to have all of the capacity of Money, and Quicken ? Portfolio, ability to transfer money between accounts at the same bank, ability to download quotes from web sites ? Maybe even some really neat stuff that they cant do. What, I dont know…..you are the programmers ! :)

The pop-up calandar for choosing the dates is wrong by one day. It shows Wednesday for today 15 Apr 2008 when instead of Tuesday.

I have 18 yrs of Quicken data, almost all split transactions. Couldn’t get to first base with import. About 1/4 of the dates were altered way into the future ie> 2012, 2020!
First time I tried importing my Quicken file in one go, I ran into a screen that I could check-mark several categories if I wanted to. I didn’t, just went for the full import. When my import was a disaster, I decided to redo it using the categories first, then a second import using the account data as suggested in a help screen. Problem is that special check-mark window is nowhere to be found this time through. Tried to hunt down some file that I may have to blitz so that function could be reactivated but gave up looking.
Looks like lots of GREAT work has been put into Moneydance and it seems to be one of the best contenders for Quicken, but I don’t think it’s quite ready to go yet.

Would be great to have the capital gains report fully functional!
Would also be great to have some more “investment” modules. The one which updates stock prices is great! What would be superb is to have a way to track one’s entire portfolio. Granted, the program is fine for the masses and that has to be the first priority. But a lot of people have multiple brokerage accounts and it would be useful to be able to see one’s entire portfolio as well as how well it is performing. Right now it is fragmented by account and that does not give a good overall picture.
Overall you folks have done a very fine job. I look forward to updated functionality. I am pleased with the ability to reconcile all of my accounts in a piece of simple software that loads quickly and downloads quickly!

Wow, guys. 2007 and 2008 have both been wonderful versions.. and again, a free upgrade for people who bought as far back as Jan ‘04! Above and beyond.
I am incredibly pleased with the budgeting improvements. The report improvements and especially the home screen budget drill-downs are *empowering* and I can’t get enough of it! (Budget was one of my least-used features up until 2008. I forsee a lot of use from it now.) Also, I’m not sure what you guys did, but MD2008 feels blazingly fast compared to its predecessors. Liking the spruced up look.
Regarding ledger entry/editing, it’s taking a little work getting used to not having those buttons under the fields. I also said a small goodbye to the last remnants of the old check-style transaction windows, but the new format is good to go. As for the shading of everything outside of the edit box, it’s OK, but I really prefer stronger contrast for readability. Any possibility of a config option in Preferences? :D
Only other thing left on my wishlist is being able to set an initial cost basis for mutual/stock securities to take care of a EOY rollover. (I kinda fudge it by using an account item as a default for an investment item, with the initial balance of the account item the same as the EOY value, then having adjustment BuyXfer’s up to that amount over the securities in my portfolio. Only downside with my current solution is that the whole balance of the investment portfolio shows up in the cash flow report as activity in the year since they’re fudged transactions with a Jan 1 date.)
Enough rambling; I just wanted to take the time to thank the whole MD crew for all the work they’ve put into this product. It’s made my life easier. It’s a real gem.

It is great to see a new update, however I have a few questions:
1. In the income and expense graph, why are the expenses pink in the pie chart and revenue blue on the pie chart but vise versa on the graph?
2. Why doesn’t the cash flow have inflows and outflows, with a net inflow or outflow at the bottom? all it is is a detail of the cash transactions.
3. Why doesn’t the income and expense report for each month present net income?
These are fairly basic needs, which require exporting to excel to complete.
I love the program and thank everyone for it.

I was wrong, the income and expense report does include net income. It is the Budget report which does not. This would be helpful.

irulats, can you email a screenshot showing the problem to sreilly at moneydance.com? Please also include your operating system’s locale/language setting.
Thanks,
Sean

Please tell me the new mystery software is a decent home inventory solution for the Mac…
April 25th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Sreilly,
I’ve done that. OS is Vista SP1. I addressed you as Seán because I know a Seán Reilly. The mind boggles.

Barry: It sounds like you didn’t select the date format in the QIF import window. That is the only thing that would cause the dates to be off in such a strange way. Unfortunately QIF files generated by software in different countries produce differently formatted dates (m/d/y or d/m/y) with no indication in the file that moneydance can read.
Also, the import account/category info only check box is still in the QIF import window but it is now at the bottom of the window.
Phil: Sorry, it’s not a home inventory solution.
Irulats: Got your email and am working on it. Just sent you a response asking for more info.

I noticed that the pop-up calendar is wrong in the French version it says that Saturday is the 2nd May, while it is the 3rd May. The whole implementation of the calendar is wrong in the French version. The names of days have been written in the wrong place, so there will be a systematic error.

i really wanted to try moneydance but your trial is not enough to see what feature i need. im hesitant to purchase what later on that is not there. like quicken they had a trial period (today) but they dont have what i wanted. so i simply canceled without spending. can i have a refund if you dont have what i need? thanks a lot.
July 5th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Jean: Can you send an email to sreilly@moneydance.com indicating the version and build number of Moneydance (from the “About Moneydance” menu/window)?
July 5th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
jeffrey: Can you explain what limit you would like to see removed or changed in order to fully evaluate the trial version? Keep in mind that imported/downloaded transactions are unlimited. The only limit in the trial version is that you can enter 100 transactions manually. You should be able to import or download all of your transactions to get a feel for how it works.
Thanks,
Sean

Are you folks ever going to fix the capital gains report so that it can actually reports the capital gains for a given period of time? Seems a bit unfair to advertise a “new capital gains report” when it doesn’t work properly.
August 6th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
David, Yes the date range has been fixed for a while in the preview version but will be released with the MD2008r2 update tomorrow morning (possibly tonight).
