The final version of help documentation for Moneydance 2010 is ready for release. You can find a PDF of this document (here). This document includes instructions for the new transaction importing and matching capabilities of our Moneydance 2010.

I’m also thrilled to let you all know that our iPhone app has received government approval and has been submitted to Apple for review! We’ll post on the blog when we hear back from them.

Can you comment on why the app needed government approval? What government?

I recently downloaded trial version of 2010 MD and noticed the Help was from 2008 version. Now I read that 2010 Help is finished. So I uninstalled and redownloaded MD 2010 but still has old 2008 Help. I assume new 2010 Help will be incorporated with 2010 MD eventually. Any idea when? Thanks.

So with the help files being done, does this mean that the import/download process is “finalized”? It seems that most people are still unhappy with the process and I thought it was still being debated…?

Hi Trevor, we’re still improving the import/download process. MD2010r3 will get us one step closer, but we’ve got much bigger improvements on the drawing board.

Thanks for your initial offering of the iPhone app. A few comments:

One of the most important features to me in an app like this is the ability to see the balances of my budgeted categories. It is a way for my wife and myself to avoid overspending on those budget categories. It doesn’t look like there is a way to do this in the iPhone app at present.

I appreciate being able to see account balances, but I already get that with apps like Mint for free, and they are always up to date. I think a Moneydance app needs to distinguish itself from the generic offerings that anyone else can provide. I’m sure some people actually manually enter transactions for most of their accounts, but I only do manual entry for cash transactions and download all my bank and credit card transactions. This means for me that the current Moneydance app only provides the very limited utility of manual cash transaction entry and sync. Seeing budget status, running reports on the budget, category balances, etc. are areas that only a Moneydance app could work for a Moneydance user, and thus would make a lot of sense as features in your next version.

Also, and certainly a more minor concern. The net sync extension synchronization code entry block needs to be much more flexible about entry format. There is no reason not to accept entries that do not include spaces (I suspect most people tried to enter the code without spaces the first time anyway) or entries that do not match in case (since it appears that the generated code is in all caps hexadecimal.

Thanks again for the initial entry – hopefully now that your past the government-induced delay you’ll be freer to add more features in future releases.

I am just making the switch from M$ Money; thank you for such a great job. The import worked far better than I expected. The biggest relief is to wave good-bye to a huge and unsupported “bloatware” program like Money. My personal comments to you are that Moneydance need not strive to become everything to everyone. For example, the handling of personal investments is extremely complex and need not be integrated into a checking program. Also, despite the convenience of on-line transaction downloading, this feature opens up too many security issues in my opinion. In short, I admire Moneydance for the small size and convenient checking entry and reconciliation.
